When was the last time that you consciously considered who you are in this exact moment? What are your interests, your habits, your beliefs? What makes you you?

While I constantly grow and learn new things about myself, I rarely take the time to stop and think about who I was, who I currently am, and who I hope to become. When I do take the time to think about it, I find that some interests and qualities about myself are much easier to accept than others. I say this because I am still, and probably always will be, learning what it means to be true to myself, as well as what it means to live that truth out with other people.

As I continue to discover the quirks and interests that define me, I have learned that certain ones continue to resurface, especially one in particular.

Confession in short: I am a grandmother living in a 23-year-old woman’s body.

I read AARP magazines for retirement tips while I’m on the elliptical at the gym. I prefer to spend my Friday and Saturday nights at home crocheting and watching Country Strong. And in addition to being a huge fan of country music, my guilty pleasure is listening to Motown music.

Yes, you read that correctly: Motown.

There’s something about the tempo, harmonies, and simple, straightforward lyrics that bring consistent joy and comfort to my day. This music tends to center me while simultaneously energizing me, which is why I chose to share “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” by The Temptations as my Song of the Week.

Whether or not you find meaning in these lyrics or a bounce in your step after listening to this song, I hope that you allow yourself to be proud of who you truly are, quirks and all. Always remember that there is no shame in being you.
