A Community of Support.

TWLOHA has been addressing suicide, depression, addiction, and self-injury and spreading the message of hope since 2006. But there are many individuals, groups, and organizations who stand alongside us in this vital mission. There is truly no limit to the places and people wherein others can find hope and help. National Suicide Prevention Week is an opportunity to point toward such life-saving resources.

HAVE ANY ORGANIZATIONS HELPED YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW?

“I have used the counseling services at my undergraduate and graduate universities, and I have promoted their services in each place. Several students have come to me to say that they visited the counseling center and that it helped them start to make some changes to their life and how they viewed themselves.” - Jessica, 22

“Being a military wife, there is Military One Source, [which] is helpful.”

“The Orlando Behavioral Hospital helped me through the aftermath of my suicide attempt. Also, the therapist I have been seeing has provided great advice. TWLOHA became an influence on my life when I was an extra in the Renee movie. I was lucky enough to meet Renee Yohe, and the filming raised my awareness about the organization.”

National Eating Disorder Association has helped me so much. I’ve attended their meetings and gotten a lot of support for my eating disorder.”

“My therapist has been amazing. I couldn’t have made as much progress as I have without her.” – Lindsay, 27

“When I discovered organizations such as TWLOHA and The Trevor Project, I began to see that I wasn’t so alone after all.”

“There were recently some adverts shown in the U.K. about mental health that I thought were great. They were an attempt at removing the stigma, but I still see there’s work to be done.”

“I owe my life to my doctor, who was the one to suggest that I seek extra help. I owe my sanity to my psychologist who is still the one who makes sure I am okay.”

“The National Suicide Hotline. I know people who have called and a complete stranger talked them through a dark time.” – Kayla, 30

“Though it’s not for every situation, I know, the support I’ve found in Twelve Step programs has helped immeasurably on my journey towards health and contentment. They saved my life.”

“TWLOHA’s presence and constant reminder that there are people who care reminds me to reach out to others in need. Other organizations: Kristin Brooks Hope Center, IMAlive, and PostSecret have similarly done the same.”

“Several friends use the counseling center at my university.” – Annie, 20

“My local chapter of Active Minds has been helpful in meeting other individuals who are committed to changing the conversation about mental health across college campuses.”

“… those quotes on the Dove chocolate wrappers…” - Kim, 17

“When Brittany Snow and Demi Lovato spoke up about their issues with bullying and depression with the Love Is Louder movement, it really helped me. Hearing stories of people I admire so much, struggling with the same issues I was made me feel less alone. Those two are so beautiful and talented. It showed me that every one struggles to feel accepted, even the people you least expect to.”

National Eating Disorder Association has personally helped me in providing me resources and websites full of support.”

National Alliance on Mental Illness posts numerous interesting articles. I am always looking for new and other places for not only help but to educate me as well.”

“I’m very impressed with the work done by American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.” – Lisa, 28

“TWLOHA, 1-800-273-TALK, RAINN Hotline, and San Diego Access & Crisis Line.”

“An organization at my school helped me through a difficult time. It just wasn’t some place where all they did was listen or try to “fix” things, but they gave you a healing process. They are there through out the whole steps of learning to accept the fact that you’re hurting and that it’s okay to receive help.”

Living Links has played a big part in the life of my mother and sister.” - Susannah, 36

The Samaritans are great when you don’t have the strength to call. You write them an email, and you get an answer where someone’s trying to help, to make it a little easier.”

“I have passed TWLOHA on to several people, and it helped me deal when my dad and several close friends were going through extremely tough situations.” – Kelli, 20

Pieta House (an Irish charity) is currently helping my boyfriend.”

“If it wasn’t for that hotline and the gentleman I talked to on that day, I might not have gotten out of bed.” – Sarah, 15

“Many of my friends and myself are out-patients at an adolescent and child mental health department. I have found my treatment there to be very helpful.”

“Inadvertently, the place where people go to in my community when they need psychological evaluations and such helped me, but it wasn’t through their therapy groups or solo sessions. It was when all the kids who were in there with me were sitting around the table playing cards. We shared stories since we knew that no one was in any position to be judging each other, and I slowly learned that there was more to life while sitting on a cold plastic chair, in a skimpy hospital gown. We laughed and grew closer together. We learned to encourage each other and we cried whenever a member of our little family of misfits was blessed enough to get discharged.” - Monica, 17
